Three Decorah High School students have performed well at the Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University Regional High School Science Bowl.
Students from 40 public, private, and home schools from across Iowa competed in a round robin style of competition involving biology, chemistry, earth science, energy, math, and physics. Scotty Hendricks, Carolina Deifelt-Streese, and Nathan Lee did battle short-handed when their fourth team member, Caroline Zheng, was ill and could not attend.
After a first round loss to Iowa City Regina, Decorah defeated Dubuque Hempstead, Shenandoah, and Aurelia to land in a three-way tie in their flight. After one tie-breaker with Hempstead and Regina, the Vikings found themselves in a second round head to head tie-breaker with Regina. For the second time that day, Regina defeated Decorah and brought the day to an end for the three Vikings.
The event was won by Ames High School, second place went to Home Schools of Eastern Iowa, and Hempstead placed third. Ames advances to Washington, D.C., for the Department of Energy's National Science Bowl this spring.
