Winneshiek County Recycling Department gives tips on recycling LP albums

Winneshiek County Recycling Department Manager Terry Buenzow is giving the public tips on the recycling of old vinyl records.

Buenzow says, "The vinyl album itself has no recyclability to it so it can go to the landfill. Vinyl is not compatible with any other types of plastic and no viable market outlet for vinyl exists. That determines its fate as landfill material, just like anything else."

Buenzow continues, "The cover itself is often thought of as cardboard, however it really isn't. It is actually chipboard. Winneshiek County Recycling bales chipboard into a recycling pack called Hard Mix. It is an obscure material grade, but it is something we make regularly. It is sent to a mill in Wisconsin that makes the brown paper roll towels you see in bathroom dispensers. The dispensers that say "Tork" on them (it's a Swedish word meaning "to wipe") are using paper towels created from Winneshiek County chipboard."
