A Decorah beverage container redemption center will stop accepting glass containers February 1st. Kelley and Tina Martin of Martin Enterprises say they are making the change because "It is just financially impossible to continue with Iowa's present system." They say they spend 20 to 25 hours a month processing the return of glass containers—and only get a net return of around $30.
The Martins say as of February 1st they will not longer accept wine & liquor glass containers and a number of other glass beverage containers. They will continue to accept containers from local beer and soft drink distributors. The recycling of aluminum cans will not be affected.
Said Kelley and Tina, "We would like to urge everyone to contact our state representatives to initiate changes in the redemption system." They thanked former state representative John Beard for his efforts on this issue.
