Wilhelm says jobs and the economy will be the top issues of the 2011 State Legislature

State Senator Mary Jo Wilhelm of Cresco says her top priority will be improving Iowa's economy and encouraging the creation of more jobs for Iowans.

"Iowans want us to stay focused on the economy," Wilhelm said.  "That's my number one priority until Iowa has fully recovered from the national recession and when more Iowans are employed than when all this started."

Control of the legislature will be divided, with Democrats controlling the Iowa Senate and a new Republican majority in control of the Iowa House.  Legislation approved by both houses must then be approved by incoming Republican Governor Terry Branstad.

Wilhelm said the budget would likely be a major issue.  "We can't go backwards on the quality of life issues that put Iowa near the top of lists of the best places to live and work," Wilhelm said.  "The fact that Iowa leads the nation in children's health care and has great local schools makes it more likely businesses will invest here.  We need to continue the community college partnerships with employers that give Iowa workers the skills to compete in the global market place."

Wilhelm said anyone with a state budget suggestion should contact her at (563) 547-4156 or at mary.jo.wilhelm@legis.state.ia.us
