Friends of the Decorah Fish Hatchery Announce "Pennies for Potties: Act 2"

Posted: Sun, Dec 19, 2010 7:13 PM

"Change" is a good thing, according to the board of the Friends of the Decorah Fish Hatchery.  24 Decorah Middle School fifth and sixth graders and their teacher, Sarah Nowack, will be placing containers in local business asking people to place their pocket change in the receptacles, with the money helping to fund the new Educational Center/Restroom facility which will be built on the Fish Hatchery grounds next summer.

Last December and January a group of DMS 7th graders raised over $1,000 in an effort called "Pennies for Potties."  This year's students are involved in an even more extensive commitment.  They have been cleaning streams at Twin Springs and Trout Run, assisting the DNR in counting birch populations to promote the habitat for ruffed grouse, building and giving away wood duck boxes, and helping the Friends of the Decorah Fish Hatchery raise money for the educational and restroom facility.

Supporters of the project have already raised approximately $165,000 of the $250,000 needed.   For additional information regarding the Friends of the Decorah Fish Hatchery project, call Brian Malaise at 382-8324 or check out the group's website at http://www.decorahfishhatchery.org/. Members of the Friends of the Decorah Fish Hatchery board are Peggy Beatty, Paul Berland, Randy Iverson, Karl Jacobsen, Tom Murray, and DNR fisheries biologists Bill Kalishek and Brian Malaise.
