Luther College finished in the middle of the pack in the "Campus Conservation Nationals," a three-week nationwide electricity and water use reduction competition held among 39 college campuses.
The Alliance to Save Energy, in partnership with Lucid Design Group and the National Wildlife Federation, designed the competition to encourage college campuses to achieve resource reductions in their residence halls over a three-week period.
On the Luther College campus, the Ylvisaker Hall showed the greatest energy conservation, with a decrease of 10.3 percent. Dieseth Hall was second and Brandt Hall was third among the nine building on the Luther campus.
Overall Luther college had a 3.7 percent reduction in energy usage at the nine buildings. De Pauw University won the contest with a 25.8 percent reduction.
While Luther College did not win the competition, it did decrease its energy consumption. Not all colleges could make the same claim. Hamilton college, for instance, finished 39th--with a 7.9 percent increase in energy consumption.
