October in Decorah was warm and dry

Posted: Tue, Nov 2, 2010 9:28 AM

It probably won't surprise you that October's precipitation total for Decorah was just 0.49 inches.  After all, we went for almost one month in late September and early October without significant precipitation.  Decorah had just five days with measurable precipitation in October.

Decorah weather observer Richard Bernatz says October was also a warm month.  The daily temperature average was 52.6 degrees, which was 2.4 degrees warmer than average.  Above average high temperatures were recorded on 26 out of 31 days in October.  However, 19 days also had below average low temperatures.  Bernatz says that's indicative of the dry air that settled in over Decorah for much of the month--a dry air mass that produced large temperature swings.

For all 113 years that temperatures have been recorded in Decorah, 26 were warmer and 87 were cooler.
