A new recycling drop-off facility has been built at the Winneshiek County Recycling Center. The new structure is over three times larger than the previous one. Replacing the old one was necessary due to the large increase in direct drop-off activity over the last few years. Having five or more cars wanting to unload at the same time has become a common occurrence. A second driveway into the facility was added to handle the additional traffic, too.
Many people have changed their recycling routine to the direct drop-off method because it is the only site in the county that is covered. Vehicles can pull under the overhang and stay out of the wind, rain, and snow. The facility also offers a wider range of sorting options, such as dedicated containers for hard cover books, paperbacks, and metal cookware such as frying pans. Additional sorting options will be added in the future.
The total cost for the new facility and driveway was $14,911.49. The funds came from the FY 10-11 Winneshiek County Recycling Department equipment replacement budget.
