The Northeast Iowa Safe Routes to School Plan has now been completed. The study involved surveying thousands of students and parents and dozens of school administrators from 34 schools in 18 Northeast Iowa school districts. The survey discovered that half of all students arrive at school on a school bus, another 31 percent arrive in a private car and another 3 percent arrive by carpool. That means just 16 percent of students get to school by either walking or riding a bike.
The Northeast Iowa Safe Routes to School Plan sets forth recommendations on how to encourage students to use "active transportation" to travel to and from school. The plan is intended to be used by school staff and parents as a guide for creating safe routes to school for their students.
