The Calmar/Ossian Police Department says one of its officers saw a motorcyclist run a stop sign in Ossian on Saturday.  The officer attempted to pull over the motorcyclist, but he fled at a high rate of speed.

The resulting chase covered several county gravel and paved roads.  It continued onto Highway 52 until the motorcyclist crashed at 120th Avenue several miles east of Castalia.

The driver of the motorcycle was taken by ambulance to Winneshiek Medical Center and then transferred by helicopter to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.  The name of the driver is being withheld, pending notification of the family.  The investigation into the accident is continuing.
