The condition of Winneshiek County's roads and what should be done about it are the central issues in the District 1 Winneshiek County supervisor race.
Supervisor candidate Mark Kuhn says he decided to run for the county board after he nearly got stuck in the road outside his house. Kuhn says "many roads are in need of repair." He believes Winneshiek County's roads are in worse shape than the roads in neighboring counties such as Allamakee, Howard and Fayette.
Incumbent supervisor Dean Darling, the county board chairman, says the other problems Winneshiek County faces are "manageable," but when it comes to roads "we need outside help." Darling says the county board has resisted calls to pay for road repairs through bonding--which would mean a rise in property taxes--and instead has concentrated on pressuring the state legislature to increase the state gasoline tax, which would increase the amount of state funds given to the county.
Republican candidate Lonnie Pierce did not attend the candidates forum.
