Owner of nuisance property gets more time to make required improvements

The Decorah City Council has given Kay Strand, the owner of a house at 701 Maple Street in Decorah, another 15 days to complete repairs to a garage at a building she owns.

The vote came Monday night after a discussion of whether Strand had done enough work at her property to deserve the extension.  City council member John Franzen said he would vote for the 15 day extension--but no more.  City council member Randy Schissel argued that Strand did not deserve the extension.  He said despite the fact Strand had been given 30 days to get the work done, no work was done until seven days before the previous deadline.

But Strand persuaded the city council she had made enough progress in completing repairs to her property--making a street cut in the curb to allow driveway access; and reseeding the boulevard in front of the house.  She now has until October 1st to put a roof on the garage at the property.
