Pulpit Rock Campground manager Craig Hunt remembered at memorial service

Craig Hunt managed the Pulpit Rock Campground for the City of Decorah for 35 years, from 1975 to 2010.  So when the 58-year-old Decorah resident died on August 31st, there was no doubt about where his funeral would be held--it would be at the Pulpit Rock Campground.

Monday morning was just the kind of day that made you wish you could go camping for a week--sunny and bright, with comfortable temperatures.  So it was a great day for a crowd of several hundred people to put lawn chairs in the back of their cars and head to the campground to remember Craig Hunt.

At the memorial service, Craig Hunt's wife, Sue Macal, told the crowd "he built more than a campground--he built a place that those who came here called home."  Even when Craig got cancer, he made a point of mowing the lawn at the campground once a week.  He even continued registering campers up to the day he died.

"Craig was no quitter," remarked Sue Macal.  "He was a great one to have on your side."  Hunt was recalled as a story teller, a good listener--and someone who was passionate about the Decorah campground.

So, in true campground style, when the memorial service was over, the people attending the service headed to picnic tables after visiting the tables where people "had brought a dish to pass."  In heaven, Craig Hunt was smiling.

Just some of the potluck picnic!
