Winneshiek County supervisors have given their go-ahead to repaving 800 feet of Conover Road. The $45,000 project is necessary because of damage done to the road by heavy trucks that used the road when the north Spillville bridge was closed for rebuilding and the detour used Conover Road.
The repaving will NOT include another 350 feet where the Prairie Farmer Trail crosses Conover Road. A bicyclist was killed at the crossing earlier this summer because dust kicked up by a truck using the road obscured the vision of a second driver. County officials say it would cost another $10,000 to pave the trail crossing—and even then there would be ten other road crossings of the Prairie Farmer Trail.
