The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department has kicked off a Special Traffic Enforcement Program, or STEP, which will put extra officers on the road through the Labor Day Weekend.
Special attention will be devoted during the STEP to seat belt use. A survey conducted by Winneshiek County Sheriff's Deputies before the STEP began showed that 96 percent of local motorists were using seat belts.
Another focus of the STEP will be to crack down on impaired driving. Last year there were 92 fatal car accidents in Iowa blamed on alcohol.
