Luther College Student Support Services program receives $1.5 million, five-year grant from U.S. Department of Education

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Luther College
a grant totaling $1.5 million to fund the Student Support Services program over the next five years.
 
SSS is designed to help ensure successful academic achievement for Luther students who meet the program's federal eligibility guidelines. At least 160 Luther students, most of whom are first-generation college students, benefit from the SSS program annually.
 
Program evaluations and awarding of grant money are based on retention and graduation rates of participants.
 
SSS program services at Luther College range from tutoring and advising to leadership development and graduate school preparation. Luther College has sponsored an SSS program for 40 years.
 
Headed by Tammy Hove, Student Support Services director, the Luther College SSS staff includes Cheryl Wieseler, advisor and instructor; Chivonne Marlow, advisor and tutoring coordinator; and Rachel Vsetecka, administrative assistant.
 
"The SSS program has a proud history and exciting future at Luther College," said Hove. "SSS has helped countless Luther students successfully complete their undergraduate degrees and go on to careers or graduate study. We view this grant as a vote of confidence in our efforts and look forward to effectively serving our students in the years to come."
 
Student Support Services is one of the TRIO programs originally funded under the Higher Education Act of 1965 whose objective is to help students overcome class, social, and cultural barriers to complete their college education.
