For the third year in a row Decorah High School has won the Class 3-A Challenge Cup, an award that measures success on the field, stage and in the classroom.
The competition, sponsored by the Iowa High School Sports Network and Bank Iowa, is a statewide ranking based on the performances of students in competition, on the stage and in the classroom. Points are assigned for every activity in which a school reaches a state competition, advances in a state competition, receives division I ratings and earns academic recognition from either the IHSAA, IGHSAU, IHSSA, and IHSMA. This year Decorah High School not only scored the most points in Class 3A, but had the most points of any school in the state with 1185 points. Decorah high school will receive the trophy and a $1500 dollar check from Bank Iowa to recognize the achievement at an awards assembly that will occur at a later date.
"We are very excited to receive this award again for the community, school district, teachers, coaches and most importantly our students," said Decorah high school activities director Adam Riley. "We are especially excited about earning the award this year, as it is the first year since the program was offered that both music and speech were included in the scoring process, making this a very true reflection upon our entire activities program and the excellent community support we receive."
