Preparations begin to educate public regarding September 14 bond referendum

Posted: Mon, Aug 9, 2010 9:07 PM

Superintendent Mike Haluska is working to prepare a FAQ and information section on the Decorah School District website (www.decorah.k12.ia.us) to inform voters regarding the upcoming $10 million bond referendum on September 14. The page will be launched soon, after additional input from Decorah Community School Board members. Haluska said the site will be an active site, changing as questions come in and issues become apparent that may need to be clarified.

Haluska also announced several dates for the public to take tours of the high school:
•    August 27,  from 6:00 p.m. until the start of the home opener football game
•    August 28, from 9:00 a.m. until noon
•    September 7, from 6:00 p.m. until the start of the volleyball game

Haluska told the School Board Monday night that the facility plans were progressing, with some natural "tweaking" after input from high school teachers. The most recent changes involve increasing some classroom sizes and adapting computer lab spaces. Haluska also told the Board that he has met with cooks and custodians, and will meet with bus drivers and each building when the school year starts.

The citizen group 2 From You, formed to promote passage of the referendum, will also be adding the FAQ list to their website - 2fromyou.org.  Their message, related to their name is:

Vote 1 - To renew the PPEL (Physical Plant and Equipment Levy), which generated $634,637 for the fiscal year 2010-11
Vote 2 - To support a bond referendum for $10 million to improve the high school.
