Improvements planned for Winneshiek County Recycling's Freeport facility

The Winneshiek county Recycling Program's Freeport facility has gotten very popular in recent months, with many more people dropping off their recyclables in Freeport instead of in the recycling bins in the county.

Now Recycling Coordinator Terry Buenzow says his program will be making improvements at the Freeport facility with an eye towards easing traffic congestion.  Paving work will allow one-way traffic at the facility, simplifying the drop-off process.  A new 20 foot by 40 foot three-sided steel shed will replace a smaller shed at the facility and will be used for cardboard drop-off and the drop-off of other recyclables.

Buenzow says the current recycling bins are filled to the top by 11:00 a.m. most Saturdays.  He says the new steel shed will have more than five times as much space as the current shed, which was built in 2001.

"We've been too popular lately," Buenzow told county supervisors on Monday, while noting he was pleased with the participation and expects the direct drop-off of recyclables in Freeport to take off even more in the future.
