NICC to offer another lead safe renovator class

Northeast Iowa Community College is offering a Lead Safe Renovator training class on Thursday, July 8th, in the Industrial Technologies building on the Calmar campus.  

The 8-hour course will run from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and will be taught by Vicky Bloxham.  It is intended for persons who have not previously been trained in Lead Safe Work Practices.  The course concentrates on specific work practices that are lead safe, and describes prohibited work practices when performing renovations.  Bloxham demonstrates lead safe work practices including set up and clean up using hands-on activities.

Contractors who work in pre-1978 housing and who might disturb painted surfaces (greater than one square foot) while doing plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting, tile, window replacement, landscaping, repairs, construction, renovation, remodeling, HVAC and demolition are required to be certified.  The regulation also applies to people who work for rental property owners, schools and daycare providers as well as non-profits and government agencies.

NICC is also offering an evening Lead Safe Renovator Refresher Course on from 5:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. on July 8th for people who have been previously trained in Lead Safe Work Practices.  This course, taught by Scott Barnett, can substitute the 8-hour course if a renovator has a training certificate to verify their completion of a Lead Safe Work Practices class. The refresher course reviews specific work practices that are lead-safe, and describes prohibited work practices when performing renovations.  

At the end of each course, there is an exam that requires a score of 80 percent or better, and then participants will be eligible to apply or reapply for certification with the Iowa Department of Public Health.  NICC has trained about 350 contractors in the last three months to meet these requirements.  To register for the Lead Safe Renovator 8-hour course or the Lead Safe Refresher 4-hour course, please call NICC at (800) 728-2256, extension 399.  A strict class size is maintained, so NICC encourages early registration.
