Luther College alumnus Carl Westphal has been selected by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board as 2010-2011 Fulbright Scholar.
The Fulbright foreign scholarship award provides funds for a year's educational experience abroad, including travel, health insurance and a living stipend.
Westphal, a native of Chaseburg, Wisconsin, graduated Magna Cum Laude from Luther in 2008. He majored in mathematics and economics. After graduation Westphal served as a small business development volunteer with the Peace Corps until he was evacuated from Mauritania in August. He is currently working as a demand forecast analyst at Best Buy's corporate headquarters.
Westphal will serve as an English teaching assistant in Egypt as a Fulbright Scholar. He submitted his post-graduate education proposal to the Fulbright program through the college's honors advisory committee.
Sponsored by the State Department, the Fulbright program is the largest U.S. international exchange program, offering opportunities for students, scholars and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.
Grantees are expected to become involved in the communities in which they travel and serve during their year abroad to increase understanding between the people of the United States and the people of the more than 150 countries that currently participate in the Fulbright Program.
