While appearing to close in on their support for involvement in a community recreation project with the City of Decorah and Luther College, the Decorah Community School Board held off action on Wednesday night, pending some legal counsel regarding lease agreements.
As it stands now, the City of Decorah has agreed to lease space on the Luther College site near Pole Line Road. Although nobody expects problems with Luther wanting the space back after the 25 year period, that lease sets the stage for the city to protect itself by leasing the property that includes the girl's softball diamond to the school district, rather than sell it. Also included in that piece of property is the baseball batting cage area and part of the baseball diamond left field. The board seemed to be willing to proceed with such a lease plan, but also thought it would be good for the district to at least clean up the property lines and arrange for transfer of the baseball related areas to the schools.
The recreational project involves soccer and softball areas at Luther; renovation and expansion of the tennis courts downtown; and the development of city park areas near the current tennis courts, softball diamond and parking areas.
