Luther College students have been very active throughout the spring and summer in support of their RARA campaign to help the people of Haiti.
Women in Haiti have been making craft items such as purses, handbags and billfolds out of recyclables. With the help of Decorah schools, churches and individuals, RARA has sold $1,400 worth of products manufactured in Haiti. New products have been added to the collection, while others are still being designed, such as a new travel bag where you can put your passport, cards and money in one place.
The RARA project also has received a large box filled with Dorito and other chip bags, which had been collected by students from Crestwood High School in Cresco. The box has been shipped to Florida to be sent to Haiti and will be used by the women entrepreneurs to make sandals,
Due to the increased in pollution the women were worried about their ability to collect trash such as chip bags, especially Dorito since it is not a common food item in Haiti.
RARA has also distributed boxes at several shopping sites in Decorah to collect items including thread, needles, zippers, key rings, irons and buttons. The items will be collected and sent to Haiti.
