The Winneshiek County Convention and Visitors Bureau has selected winners for the fourth annual photo contest. First place went to Wendy Carolan of Decorah with her photo taken near Bluffton at the home of Blaine & Julie Christopher.
"It's tradition for the Christopher's to invite family and friends over for a day of sledding," said Carolan. "You're lucky if you make it down the hill without going in the creek!"
"I have always loved photography," she says. "I want to be able to tell a story through my photos."
Carolan received a prize package worth over $200 donated by Pepsi Cola of Decorah, River & Trail Outfitters, the Dairy Center, Winneshiek Wildberry Winery, and Hotel Winneshiek. This photo will be used to promote the area via brochures, web site and print advertising.
"People shots are so important," says WCCVB Director Brenda Balk. "It's a simply way for people to visualize what it might be like to spend time with their family in this area. This particular photo depicts a positive and fun family experience and that's especially what we love to promote."
Steven Yoder of Bokeelia, Florida received an honorable mention for his photo, taken of the Winneshiek County Courthouse. "I've lived in Florida my entire life but family is what brings me to the Decorah area," said Yoder. "I love there. The scenery is striking - absolutely beautiful. With so much packed into such a small town, I can't help but grab my camera and shoot away."
Balk encouraged submission of photos to her office anytime during the year.
"It's always a lot of fun, plus we do use many of the photo entries in a variety of ways promote the area to visitors."
