Luther College soon will be installing low-flow showerheads in all its campus shower rooms. The switch is the result of a student-led pilot project that tested more than 75 low-flow showerheads in shower rooms on 25 floors in five Luther residence halls.
The college's sustainability group did tests and discovered that the original showerheads used approximately 2.5 gallons of water per minute. The pilot project installed five different models of showerheads that all had flows ranging from 1.5-2 gallons per minute.
After two weeks of the pilot program, a survey of students discovered some students even thought the low-flow showers were better than the originals. The top three favorite designs were then installed on more floors in Brandt Hall, all the women's floors in Miller and Farewell Halls and all of the floors in Olson, Larsen, and Ylvisaker residence halls.
Surveys were conducted in the additional locations. The showerhead selected by those students was the model with the lowest flow--1.5 gallons per minute. Luther will now be installing the student favorite showerheads in all campus shower rooms.
