13 Decorah non-profit organizations are facing the loss of their tax-exempt status

The National Center for Charitable Statistics, a program run by the Washington D.C.-based Urban Institute, says 13 Decorah non-profit organizations may lose their tax-exempt status if they do not file an IRS Form 990 by the end of the day on Monday.

Most tax-exempt organizations (except churches) must file a yearly return or notice with the IRS.  Any organization that had more than $25,000 in gross receipts needs to file a Form 990 or 990-EZ.  If an organization does not file as required for three consecutive years, the organization automatically loses its tax-exempt status.  Loss of exempt status means an organization must file income tax returns and pay income tax and its contributors will not be able to deduct their donations.

The NCCS has analyzed the latest information from the IRS Business Master File.  The organization cautions that its information is NOT a substitute for IRS determination of status.

The 13 Decorah-based non-profit organizations whose tax exempt status will expire on Monday if a Form 990 is not filed are: Black Earth Collaborative Arts Company; Decorah Rotary Club Scholarship Foundation Inc.; Decorah Senior Citizens Center; Luther College Chapter of American Guild of Organists; Luther College Omicron Delta Epsilon Economics Honor Society;  Luther College Pi Kappa Lambda Epsilon Omega Music Society; Madison 4-H Club; Madison Lutheran Cemetery Association; Northeast Iowa People for Animal Welfare; 1903-1909 Early Ford Registry Inc.; Washington Future Scholars Fund; Washington Prairie Peppers; and the Winneshiek County Dairy Club.

Four more Decorah non-profit organizations will lose their tax-exempt status if they do not file a Form 990 by November 15th: Imaginarium Inc.; Luther College Student Chapter Association for Computing Machinery; Luther College Psi Chi Psychology Honor Society; and the Winneshiek County Physical Therapy Center.  Two other organization will lose their tax-exempt status spring if they do not file a Form 990: the Delta Phi Alpha National Honorary German Fraternity; and the Northeast Iowa Chapter of Service Corps of Retired Executives.
