New rules about lead paint causing high demand for classes at NICC

The 2009 Iowa Legislature passed a law giving the Iowa Department of Public Health the authority to supervise construction projects that might involve the removal of lead-based paint. The rules by the State Board of Health went into effect on January 13th and required contractors to take eight hour training courses in lead paint removal. Anyone who works on properties built prior to 1978 MUST follow Iowa Lead Regulations.
Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar has been busy meeting the demand for this training. NICC Continuing Education Program Manager Mary Steen says around 125 people have already taken an 8-hour training program from the school. NICC is an Iowa Approved Training Provider.
The classes cover the Lead Safe Work Practices. The State of Iowa will allow people who have previously taken the class to qualify for the new certification with a 4-hour upgrade course.
A Lead Safe Renovator 8 hour class will be offered May 13th or May 27th or June 10th or July 8th or August 12th at NICC Calmar. A Lead Refresher 4 hour class will be offered twice on Thursday, May 11th or June 10th or July 8th or August 12th. Advanced registration is required for all the workshops. Call NICC to register at (563) 562.3263 or (800) 728-2256, extension 399. You can visit www.iowalifechanging.com for instructions on how to request reimbursement for the Lead Safety classes.
