Three Luther College seniors have been selected for Fulbright Foreign Scholarship awards for 2010-2011. Waucoma resident Jaclyn Jirak, Bettendorf resident Laura Mohs and St. Louis Park, Minnesota resident Brandon Reed will receive scholarships paying for a year's educational experience abroad, including travel, health insurance and a living stipend.
Jirak will serve as an English teaching assistant in the Czech Republic. Mohs will serve as an English teaching assistant in Bulgaria. Reed will serve as an English teaching assistant in Indonesia.
The Fulbright commission also recognized Luther senior Erin Lunde, from Cooperstown, North Dakota, who was selected as an alternate grantee.
Sponsored by the State Department, the Fulbright is the largest U.S. international exchange program, offering opportunities for students, scholars and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.
The program, introduced to Congress by Senator J. William Fulbright, was established in 1946 in order to foster leadership, learning and empathy between cultures. Since its inception, approximately 300,000 students have participated in the program.
