How can Decorah be more bike friendly?

Posted: Tue, Apr 13, 2010 5:13 PM

Members of the Decorah Planning & Zoning Commission have been presented with some suggestions for making Decorah more bikeable.

The group of biking enthusiasts has created a map that shows possible bike routes in Decorah and possible improvements to bicycle traffic in the city.

Group spokesperson Kirk Johnson says "these are things you could do."  Johnson notes that it will be up to the Decorah City Council to determine which suggestions to adopt--and to find funding for the projects.

The suggestions range from installing three small roundabouts in town, to creating a better bike and pedestrian crossing on College Drive at Iowa Avenue; to reducing college Drive to three lanes and adding bike lanes and turning lanes; to creating better crossings on Montgomery Street at Main street and near Medicap.

The map is at www.exploredecorah.com, with another map copy at http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&vps=1&jsv=225b&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=103851744352476753030.00047eb8139b2b07ef038.  Click on either map for pop-up windows that explain the group's suggestions..
