Winneshiek County supervisors say they support Recreational Facilities proposal

Members of REPSI, the group studying recreational facilities in Decorah, got a warm welcome Monday from the Winneshiek County Board.

Group members met the supervisors to give a presentation about the softball field and soccer field complex proposed for Highway 52 and Pole Line Road, on land owned by Luther College.

Following the group's presentation, County Board Chairman Dean Darling stated, "I don't think there's any question but that we'll be supportive of this project financially."

Supervisor Les Askelson suggested that one way Winneshiek County could support the project would be by having fill that is scheduled to be taken from a field near Luther college deposited on the softball and soccer field property, instead of being hauled to property in Freeport, as is now planned.

The support from the county supervisors came after Decorah Park-Rec Department representative Andy Nimrod presented figures that showed that 55 percent of kids participating in Park-Rec programs come from homes outside the Decorah city limits.  Nimrod said the percentage of adults from outside the Decorah city limits participating in Park-Rec adult leagues was even higher--around 65 percent.
