The Winneshiek County organization "Celebration of Life" provides for free mammograms of qualifying women three times each year--in April, July and November.
So the group is publicizing the fact that women interested in getting a free mammogram should apply soon by downloading an application at the Celebration of Life website.
At the same time, Gundersen Lutheran is publicizing the fact that breast cancer isn't seasonal and a mammogram should be a key part of a woman over 40's annual health screening.
Gundersen Lutheran says early detection means there is a 90 to 95 percent chance of long-term survival. "Early detection is so important," says Gundersen Lutheran Center for Breast Care Clinical Manager Gayle Jago. "An annual screening mammogram, along with breast self examinations and clinical breast exams, is key to reducing the number of deaths due to breast cancer. Early detection gives us the most treatment options," says Jago.
"Mammograms have significantly improved over the years," says Jago. "Now with the advances in technology, the machine is more patient-friendly and technologist-friendly. At Gundersen Lutheran, mammograms are more comfortable and faster than before" says Jago.
The Celebration of Life mammograms are given at both Winneshiek Medical Center and at Gundersen Lutheran-Decorah Clinic, with women getting to choose the location.
Completed applications can be dropped off at Margaret's Clothing in Decorah or mailed to Margaret's at 210 W. Water Street in Decorah.
