Plan presented for $1.4 million recreational facilities project in Decorah

The Recreational Places and Spaces Initiative on Monday night presented City of Decorah officials with the group's proposal for a $1.4 million recreational field complex on property at Highway 52 and Pole Line Road.

The complex would include two softball fields; two more softball practice fields; one dedicated soccer pitch; green space for several temporary soccer fields; a concession stand and restrooms; and parking space for 190 cars.

Luther College has offered a 25-year lease on the property for the city.  However, it is asking that construction on any development begin by mid-May of 2011.

Decorah Parks and Recreation Director Rick Edwards told the Decorah City Council Monday night "this is a beautiful piece of property."  Edwards says the project has the support of the Parks and Recreation Board.

Andy Nimrod from the Parks and Recreation Department said the facilities would "increase and enhance what Park-Rec can offer."  Nimrod said the complex would especially be an improvement over the #2 softball field, which is located next to a busy road.

RESPI members said they would look for $515,00 in grants, $511,000 in donations and $724,000 in public funds for the project.

The Decorah City Council, following RESPI's presentation, approved a resolution asking Luther College to draw up a lease for the property.
