A Decorah business has cleared the first hurdle towards getting a tax break for building new facilities. Brynsaas Sales & Service wants to construct a new headquarters in the Henning commercial subdivision off Highway 9, next to A-1 Gutters. It has requested that the property it has bought be included in an urban revitalization district.
The designation means property taxes on the improvements Brynsaas hopes to make would be phased in over a ten years period, instead of all at once. Brynsaas' attorney, Rick Zahasky, told county supervisors on Monday, "By encouraging development, you're increasing property tax collections."
Supervisors agreed and unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance to include Brynsaas's property within the Urban Revitalization District. A second reading of the ordinance will be held next Monday.
