Several readers have asked us why the American flag was flown in Decorah on Monday. The answer is that Monday was "Vietnam Veterans Day"--or, at least it was in Iowa (several other states have established March 30th instead of March 29th as "Vietnam Veterans Day.")
You might not realize it, but there are a lot of rules about the display of the American flag. There's a whole section of the U.S. Code governing how to display the flag.
There is also a list of days where it's recommended that the American flag be flown. The Decorah Street Department has a list of those days--and puts up the flags on those days.
