Seed Savers Exchange, Inc. of Decorah has announced that a third deposit of heirloom seeds has been deposited safely into the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway.
The third deposit makes a total of just under 1,400 open pollinated varieties sent by Seed Savers to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault since the vault opened in February 2008.
Even though Seed Savers' deposit is only a small portion of the 500,000 total deposits at Svalbard, Seed Savers' contribution is unique because the heirloom varieties are mostly seeds conserved by home gardeners.
