Winneshiek County supervisors agree that having private enterprise taking over the collection of garbage in rural parts of the county is a great idea. The problem is nobody else wants to do it.
Supervisors met Monday with several private garbage haulers. None of them expressed an interest in taking over rural garbage collection from the county.
The idea had been suggested by county resident Paul Hunter, who argued paying for rural garbage pickup isn't a necessary task of county government.
County supervisors praised Hunter's idea--but then got no response from the private garbage haulers. Concluded County Board Chair Dean Darling, "I don't think this has any legs--just because there's nobody privately interested in doing this."
