State Representative John Beard of Decorah today announced that the Winneshiek Energy District will receive $41,350 and the Hawkeye Rural Electric Cooperative will receive $83,750 in energy grants.
The Winneshiek Energy District plans to use their grant to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the drain of energy costs from the local economy in Winneshiek County. The organization is working on three specific pilot projects: an ongoing community energy roundtable; a community-wide energy planning and technical assistance program; and a multi-faceted education, awareness and demonstration campaign.
Hawkeye Rural Electric Cooperative, Heartland Power and Dairyland Power Coop plan to use their grant to establish a community based energy audit program and an energy efficiency "apprenticeship" program with Northeast Iowa Community College.
