It was cold during Tuesday night's Orange Bowl game in Miami--at least by Miami standards. Decorah residents Doug and Kendra Van Sloten, the parents of Iowa Hawkeye football player Brett Van Sloten, say the temperatures reminded them of Iowa City.
"It was good football weather," says Doug, who admits he put on four layers of clothing before attending the game. The temperature was in the 40s, but Doug says the wind was blowing, which made it feel colder. "It was a good thing I brought some hats and gloves," says Kendra.
But the Decorah couple says they forgot about the cool temperatures once the football game got started. They especially enjoyed the halftime show with Kool & The Gang playing their hits--and then, of course, there was Iowa's 24-14 victory over Georgia Tech in a BCS bowl game.
To top it all off, the Van Slotens sat next to Olympic gymnast Shaun Johnson, whose boyfriend is also a freshman on the Iowa football team. In a twist of fate, it was the second time the Van Slotens had sat next to Shaun Johnson. They attended an Iowa men's basketball game last year and sat next to her--and near to Demi Moore and Ashton Kuscher.
